Was danach kam, lásst sich von wenigen Ausnahmen abgesehen, kurz und bündig mit nur einem einzigen Wort benennen: Nagra.*From the early 1940s onwards but particularly after the Second World War, the world of magnetic tape recorders was populated by various strangelooking hybrids †“ something between gramophone and tape recorder. The gramophone-type clockwork motor was a major component of construction. Only at first sight it may be astonishing that nearly all those strange, simplelooking clockwork-driven tape recorders were designed for professional use from the very beginning.Well, it was still the early era of magnetic tape recording. For the general public, this technology was unknown and far too expensive anyway. It was not before 1950 that the first very expensive magnetic tape recorders were available for home use. Years went by before a tape recording amateur could go hunting for sounds with a more or less useful and portable battery-operated tape recorder. By the end of 1950, he dragged his tape recorder from wall socket to wall socket at best. Mobile magnetic tape machines independent of the mains were confined primarily to professional use for a long time.At the end of 1945/ beginning of 1946, right after the Second World War, the first fully-fledged clockwork-driven tape recorder for reportorial use appeared. This recorder opened up new possibilities for radio reports. Some time later, various manufacturers worldwide made efforts to produce small, portable and mains-independent clockwork-driven tape recorders for reportorial use and later film sound tape recorders. However, there was no greater variety of professional clockwork-driven tape recorders than in Germany and the United states where they were long used. Whether radio, film sound or newsreel †“ clockwork-driven tape recorders were indispensable till the mid 1960s, and the machines were used for film production even till the mid 1970s. What came after that can be described †“ apart from some rare exclusions †“ in just one word: Nagra."
